Longwitton Dene

The river Hart is one of the most attractive rivers that flow into the Wansbeck. The most accessible spot is Longwitton dene. When I first came here over 25 years ago Redstarts and pied flycatchers were breeding birds here utilising the nest boxes put up to attract them. These birds have moved to the uplands and the only birds I saw were 3 Spotted flycatchers feeding above the river. I also saw Red squirrel but this is a fine place for plants. Herb paris grows here but the most interesting place is an old brick wall which is full of flowers and ferns. I have posted pictures of Green alkanet and Greater celandine but many plants were in flower including Solomons seal

This is the type of place I love to go (I lived in Netherwitton until age 4), could you give me directions please and it is a circular walk? Many thanks.

Thanks l. If you are travelling fom Morpeth town centre take the left turn off for Cambo and Wallington hall at the top of Newgate street. Follow this road through Mitford, past the Dyke neuk pub until you come to Hartburn village, just ouside the village towards Scots gap there is a double bend. Before the last bend there is a gravelly pull in on your right. Leave the car here and follow the track down to Longwitton dene. You can walk past Garden house through the woods til you come to Longwitton dene farm. Turn right here towards Wittonstone. A right turn here will bring you back to your starting point, about three and a half mile round trip.

I hiked 600 miles one summer 10 years ago, and your photos remind me of how much I miss wandering to just take photos. I live in Miami, Florida, US. I enjoyed browsing your site, thank you so much.
