Back in the meadows

Back to work this week and my days off have been catching up with post holiday chores etc. Quiet in the woods and meadows and the river Wansbeck is looking like it does in February, any more rain and it will burst it's banks. Just a couple of pics of Lords and Ladies the top one taken in early May and what is possibly the same plant taken today in fruit and a Hygrocybe species of fungi probably Hygrocybe chlorophana, Golden waxcap.

Good holiday there Nigel...plants dying back now, insects on the wane, lets hope for some migration...

Cheers Stew, I saw a lot more than I mentioned but I returned to the rain and visits to Bothal and Longhirst flash have been quiet because of the high water levels. Ruddy duck is the best thing I've seen since I came back.

The top photo is of an intriguing looking plant, one that I am not familiar with. We have had a lot of rain this summer also and after about three week we are finally forecast to have several days to total sun in a row. perhaps we may get a bit of summer back.

The plant is Arum maculatum also known as Cuckoo pint or Lords and ladies. It is quite common in wooded valleys around here. It has attractive but poisonous berries in the late summer. One good thing about the wet weather is there is plenty of fungi around so future posts will feature these plants I guess.
